marcel dettmann - Translation EP
Terrific new 4-track EP of muscular, reduced and immaculately grooving techno from man like Dettmann. There are few producers on this earth who can create techno music that sounds sensuous and danceable while still being harsh and heavy enough to scrape the paint off a warehouse's walls, but the Berghain badman is one of them, and this EP feels to us like some of his most gripping material we've heard outside of his own MDR imprint. After a short, almost post-punk-esque opening gambit 'Barrier' - a teasing combo of atmospheric drones, pattering toms, sub-low bass and sampled nuclear war chat - it all kicks off in 'Translation One', which conjures the aerobic style of vintage Regis and Female while giving it an unmistakeable Teutonic finesse. 'Translation Two' is more minimal and kind of impossible to get out of your noggin once you've heard it, being a devastatingly effective synthesis of stripped, dubbed 4/4 punch and slippery arpeggiated melody - a right little wriggler this one, well worth the price of admission alone. 'Planning' occupies similarly melodic, insistent terrain, nicely scuffed drum programming underscoring a tumbling, tricksy synth motif. This guy knows what works.
