aardvarck - Anti Concept
Our favourite bifter-wielding beat-builder resurfaces, and how. Over the years Aardvarck has proved himself to be a master of pretty much every style he tries his hand at, and this album really takes you on an epic road-trip through his skunked-out preoccupations, beginning with a triptych of beatless pieces treading the line between eerie synth-scaping and caustic noise - 'O'Malley' is surely a tribute to Stephen?! When the drums do begin to assert themselves, it's tentatively at first, as on the ambient techno cruiser 'Leuk He! Over Chord' and the dusky trip-hoppers 'Hassel' and 'Aaah' (which effortlessly beat the Brainfeeder crew at their own game). Once it's on, it's on, and the main body of the album explores the space between broken hip-hop and rude dubstep derivations, with edits of his infamous Bloom productions interspersed with newer cuts like the sci-fi wobbler 'Syboooo' and R&B jeep-shaker 'Kermis'. With few tracks breaking the 3-minute mark, Anti Concept is more like a freewheeling beat tape than anything else, and the concentration of ideas into such short pieces is just mind-blowing. Aardvarck is a proper head's producer, and those of you who know your onions won't need any further incitement to check this record out.
