mark mcguire - Get Lost
Emeralds' Mark McGuire serves up his much-anticipated second set of original solo material for Editions Mego, following last year's Living With Yourself. The young Ohio native conjures, once again, a distinctly American but moreover cosmic-tinged sylvania - all campfires, marshmallows and flasks of 'shroom tea - on an album tellingly dedicated to "friends, family and the spirit of the summer night sky". His lush electric and acoustic guitars are the main event as ever, but with more electronic elements than usual and even some discreet vocals, most notably on the twinkling loop-techno of 'Alma (Reprise) / Chances Are'. Though we’re reminded as usual of Manuel Gottsching and Vini Reilly's six-string sketching, and even Jim O'Rourke's folksier solo albums, Get Lost finds McGuire stepping up and nailing his own distinctive sound down. There are dozens of other texturally-attuned axe-wielders working out of the US underground today, but none can match the melodic gift of this kid- 'Get Lost' and 'Another Dead End' are pop anthems by any other name. The second side of the LP is given over to one long piece, 'Firefly Constellations', a flickering ambient jam of synth oscillation and plaintive strumming that's naturally Emeralds-esque, but with a warmth and homespun honesty that's definitively McGuire solo. A magnificent album from a huge and consistent talent, mastered at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin.
