cfcf - Cometrue (Deon Mix)
Terrific new EP from CFCF, further evolving his neo-Balearic sound into a kind of bass-heavy, hard-grooving techno-pop. 'Cometrue' has 'summer anthem' scribbled all over its sunburnt forehead, but its big pianos, imploring vocals and chillwaving keyboard licks sound quite special when paired, as they are here, with a tough stepper's beat and subs fit for a boy racer's cylinder bassbin. The increasingly impressive D'eon is good choice of remixer, and he re-styles 'Cometrue' as a tropical house bomb, letting rip with his synthesizers to create a deep rave killer with an unashamed hankering for transcendence - this isn't just some lo-fi chancer's take on techno, it's the proper stuff, dazzling ambitious, pert and dancefloor-primed. Physical Therapy delivers a more pensive but still nicely rugged refix of the same track, accentuating the Fourth World FX and punishing the drums with an unholy amount of echo. The other CFCF original, 'Looking So', is like Burial's spectral garage tweaked for a Californian beach rather than the South London boroughs, and rounds out a highly impressive and original EP.
