elan - Alligator Snaps EP
**Tough new EP of futureboogie and teched-out hip-hop on Modeselektor's Monkeytown label, with a superb remix from Cosmin TRG.** Having impressed last year with his FaltyDL split on 50 Weapons and more recently his Bleep Bloop Brrrrmmp EP, California's Elan Stouffer - a member of the WEDIDIT collective with Shlohmo et al - returns with four juicy beat tracks produced with the bass-maxed assurance and synthetic exuberance of early Rustie or Hud Mo. His music feels organic and carefully constructed: you barely notice the title track morphing from quaint electronic pop sketch into completely gripping ballers' techno, while 'Hunting Season' gives the purple wow sound an expansive, cinematic quality without making it any less heavy. 'Saccharin On Top' is rudeboy R&B abstraction taken to dizzy, dotty new heights - brutally minimal 808 drum hits, woofer-rupturing bass and wailing sirens teamed with a melody that wouldn't sound out of place on an EMAK record. 'Shoot The Beam' continues in this vein, and then Cosmin TRG turns up to give 'Alligator Snaps' the onceover in his inimitably hurtling, hi-hat-heavy techno style - absolute quality.
