jefre cantu-ledesma - Shining Skull Breath
Jefre Cantu-Ledesma re-casts his elusive 'Shining Skull Breath' album from 2007 with two new tracks on an expanded edition remastered for vinyl by James Plotkin. Arguably it's one of Jefre's definitive solo statements outside of his work with The Alps and Tarentel, immersing the listener in an ecology of shoegaze pop drones where ambient atmospheres and elemental noise define the climate. The A-side is structured to expose us to the elements, from open expanses of rolling, grey sky and moorland on 'Distant Star (For Pete Swanson)', its howling climax leading to the caves of 'Cannibal Hymn', back into the precipitous panorama of the title track, before finding shelter and relief with 'Tigris And Euphrates' and being submerged in viscous, gritty distortion and staring up to 'Diamond Stars'. With a few exceptions, it feels like we're out of the inclement conditions on the other side, reaching the far horizon of his metaphoric soundscape. You'll know you're there when confronted with the heart-breakingly gorgeous ambient drone vista of 'The Last Time I Saw Your Face It Was A Dying Star', while the two new tracks extend the journey through sepulchral guitar and drizzly apparitions of 'Witch Head Nebula', and the plangent, heavy-breathing dronescape of 'Tender Radiance'. You should return from this mind-hike muddied and drenched, but sublimely satisfied. Limited copies - highly recommended.
