paul white - Rapping With Paul White
**New album from discerning hip-hop collagist and library music digger extraordinaire, Paul White.** The London-based producer made a big splash with his 2009 debut 'The Strange Dreams of Paul White', which combined an authentic beat junkie sensibility with a more unorthodox and psychedelic agenda; and then pushed himself even further with last year's 'Paul White & The Purple Brain', which took a haul of recordings of cult Swedish guitarist S.T. Mikael as its starting point. This new LP, Rapping With Paul White, is, as its title suggests, a more collaborative work: here White's eccentric samplescapes are animated with vocal turns from Guilty Simpson, much-talked-about Danny Brown, Homeboy Sandman, Moe Pope, UK hip-hop survivor Jehst, Tranqill, Nancy Elizabeth and more. How much you enjoy the results is of course dependent on how well you get on with each vocalist: some inevitably fare better than others, the always good-value Guilty acquitting himself beautifully with his dark, gravelly contributions to lead single 'Trust' and 'Dirty Slang', and Danny Brown bringing a gloriously hectic flow to 'One Of Lifes Pleasures' (this piano-driven banger is on a par with recent Kanye and Big Boi, and achieved on a tiny fraction of their budgets). A good number of instrumental tracks are included too, and it's here where White's formidable MPC skills are most thrillingly displayed: as on the stuttering funk-rock bastardisation of 'A New Way', the minimal tribal roller 'African New Wave' (like Shackleton for B-boys or something) and Dilla-esque soul burner 'Thirty Days'. It's not without its flaws, but in the main this album is a joy to listen to, and a real leap forward for its maker. A must-check for the beat-hungry.
