marcel fengler - Thwack Remixes (Norman Nodge / Planetary Assault Systems / Mike Parker)
Steely, muscular techno from Marcel Fengler and friends. Fresh from dropping the latest Berghain mix CD on Ostgut Ton, Fengler is back on Luke Slater's Mote Evolver to revisit the title track from last year's Thwack EP. Norman Nodge leads the charge with a low-slung, dub-spiced 4/4 prowler that creates incredible tension with the sparest of elements. Luke Slater himself provides two remixes: his Planetary Assault Systems offering is warehouse techno in excelsis, industrial accents peeling off a relentless, tunnelistic pulse - proper Berlin business. His LB Dub Corps treatment is less immediately striking, but ultimately more rewarding: its minimal percussion swings with the well-oiled elegance of a Martyn or AMUS beat, but fundamentally the track's driven by far more haunting and druggier energies than either Dutchman could conjure. Almost subliminally its mounting vampiric ambience just completely overwhelms you. An incredibly strong remix package is rounded out with a version from dark techno producer du jour, Mike Parker. He rises to the occasion with a stone-cold killer - bleepy, dead-eyed but strangely levitating fare reminiscent of Sandwell District and his old mucker Donato Dozzy
