vessel / el kid - VeElSkSiEdL
Originally a cassette release, the confusingly titled ‘VeElSkSiEdL’ is surprisingly far from the noisy VHS-taped ambience you’d expect given the format (and probably that title, too). In fact we kick off with Vessel’s chunky ‘Voluminous Coils’, which has far more in common with 2562 or Martyn than it does with James Ferraro or Forest Swords. With a latent sense of disco sleaze Sebastian Gainsborough makes the sound his own with a nod to the Bristol scene (think Peverelist) and more than a hint of 2-step. Eventually the format begins to make total sense when the beat-driven intensity of Vessel’s tunes drizzle into El Kid’s hazy ambience, mid way through the album. El Kid has a way with textures, and his noise-laced piano and synthesizer miniatures are to tapes as peas are to carrots. That is, before he begins to coax in the beats and we’re back to the kind of twisted dancefloor expertise that wouldn’t have gone to waste in Chicago back in the early 90s. Sure, the artists are probably missing the warming saturation on the top-end that only cassette tape can give, but don’t be mistaken here – Vessel and El Kid are not merely another couple of lo-fi electronica producers, this is good stuff.
