throwing snow - Un Vingt / Cronos (Remixed Vol. 1)
Having inaugurated Alex Nut's Ho_tep label with the 'UN Vingt/'Cronos' single, Throwing Snow presents a slew of remixes of those tracks as the first drop on his own Snowfall imprint. George Fitzgerald kicks off Vol.1, moulding ‘Cronos’ into a a slick, well-groomed tech-garage roller replete with crisp claps and sumptuous synth smacks. Ital Tek's version of ‘Un Vingt’ is on a seriously rude garage flex (El-B’s ‘Express’ comes to mind), but it’s the jangly, chiming melodies that linger in the mind long after the needle's moved on. DEON's remix of the same track taut tribal-tech in the vein of T. Williams and Cooly G, but its big, tooth-grindingly euphoric breakdown and rough-as-f**k drum choppage are more in the Jam City zone. For us it’s Throwing Snow’s own re-version which satisfies best, with organ lines rollercoasting over shuffling post-UKF rhythms – imagine a more austere Girl Unit or maybe Kowton and STL on a white wine bender. Really strong material.
