peterlicker - Nicht
**Advanced doom machinations from the deepest bowels of the Viennese underground, helmed by Peter Rehberg.** Editions Mego describes this outing as "modern electronic rock", but that scarcely does justice to the exquisitely disgusting and disquieting sounds on offer. Rehberg is of course no stranger to avant-metal excursions thanks to his work with Stephen O'Malley in KTL, but Peterlicker eschews the more pensive qualities of that project in favour of an altogether more severe and guttural artistic vision. Opener 'Always Right' is a righteous exorcism: across jabbing sequenced sub-bass that feels like it could erupt into dubstep wobble at any give moment, F.Hergovich spews out distorted, tortured vocals that would make Attila Csihar run for cover; it's the sound of an orc returning to Mordor from battle to find his missus has cheated on him. 'Tunnel 47053' foregrounds C. Schachinger's guitar, swathing it in enough static and distortion; it's so ear-scorchingly heavy that it's liable, perversely enough, to put you in a kind of bliss-state; indeed, the production is so rich and nuanced throughout Nicht that you’re able to swim around in the muck rather than simply being pelted with it. 'Raised On Rock' has distant air-raid sirens and savage digital edits sounding out over an unyielding crust of clotted bass. before a loop of serene music-box chimes arrives, summoning the deserted, fire-ravaged post-war zones of Kevin Drumm's Imperial Distortion suggesting that their may - may - be some redemption to be found on the other side of armageddon. Side 2 is given over to two longer pieces: the scything industrial drone-core of 'C-Slide', and the aptly name 'Schleim' - which has something like a swamp-rock groove going on under the layers of psychedelic scree. Limited to 500 copies and cut at Dubplates + Mastering for full head-crushing effect, the dark stuff simply doesn't get better than this. Fans of Sunn O)), KTL, K.Drumm, Burial Chamber Trio, Prurient - you know what to do.
