gold panda - Companion
Ghostly do the right thing and compile a whole ruck of early material from Gold Panda onto this 13-track 'companion' to his recent 'Lucky Shiner' album. Featuring three early EP's - 'Before', 'Miyamae', and 'Quitter’s Raga', along with one non-EP track (“Police”), the material here veers from broken downtempo off-beat ambience ('Fifth Ave', 'Long Vacation', 'Lonely Owl', 'Heaps'), to slightly shoe-gazy, out-of focus loveliness ("Like Totally") to more frenetic percussive arrangements ('Win-san Western'), with Gold Panda's sun-bleached concoction of warm hiss and glowing fuzz present throughout. The previously unreleased 'Police' heads off in a slightly different direction to end the selection with an uptempo line in disco-edit styling - and it works a treat. Lovely material - if you liked 'Lucky Shiner', this will rule your world. Recommended.
