gushee (pursuit grooves) - GuSHee
GuSHee is an enticing avant-R&B/electronica prospect from producer/vocalist Vanese Smith (Pursuit Grooves - Tectonic Records) and experimental hiphop turntablist and Otnorot Recordings head, Cheldon Paterson. Apparently the two connected via myspace through a mutual love of Portishead, Bjork and Herbert, which makes sense hearing the melancholy electronic soul music on their debut collaborative release. Vanese's meticulous beat programmign is evident throughout, from the downstroked bump of 'When I Think Of You...Sunshine' to the double-timed flux of 'Monday Ride' and the crooked caculations of 'I Think I'm Gnna Make It'. But, the emphasis is really placed more on vibe and atmosphere, as with the New Aged intimacies of album highlight, 'Dream Texturizer' or the lush spumes of silky synth in 'Making Babies' and the woozy harmonics of 'Patiently Waiting', each marked with Vanese's versatile vox, ranging from hushed lobe tickling to cracked, Georgia Anne Muldrow-like soul and naif, Little Dragon styles.
