Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
Mogwai have proven over the last few years that they are the great survivors of the post rock world. The popularity of that genre as a whole may have waned in recent years, but Mogwai’s arching influence is still heard throughout swathes of young bands, and Stuart Braithwaite and co. are proving that they might just have the staying power of their heroes Sonic Youth. ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’ sees the band hook up once more with the production duo of Andy Miller and Paul Savage who famously crafted Mogwai’s crowning moment ‘Young Team’. This has definitely helped the band recapture a little piece of the grit we heard back in the mid 90s, but that’s not to say they’re retreading old ground. The band’s insistence on change, which has seen them move into electronic and near Kraut-ish territory is still on show here, but in an even more successful mode than on their last album ‘The Hawk Is Howling’. The electronic Neu!-esque shuffle of recent single ‘Mexican Grand Prix’ is an instant stand-out, but the finest moment comes, typically enough, from the albums long-form closer ‘You’re Lionel Richie’. Bringing to mind that perfect close all those years ago of ‘Mogwai Fear Satan’, this near ten-minute piece sees the band returning to the darkside, and underpinning it with the kind of gloomy melancholia that was so often their calling card. The neon-lit grey streets of Glasgow just about flicker to life in the distance as the track kicks into a noisy crescendo – this is the Mogwai we know and love. Job very well done, lads.
