anduin - XXVII
You can always rely on Richmond-based Jonathan Lee (aka Anduin) for grimy, dark ambient escapism. This latest mini-album continues his rich, coal-black seam following the excellent ‘Abandoned In Sleep’ LP and takes his sound into deeper, weirder places than ever before. Based on performances and an installation in a gallery in 2010, the music here is harrowingly low-key; wavering synthesizer drones are placed over heaving field recordings giving the record a somewhat frightening eerie quality. At times you can almost hear things in the room with you as you listen; a knife, a chain, footsteps or something more sinister altogether? Lee’s use of early 80s horror synthesizer sounds only serves to accentuate this, and rather than follow the trend and embark on a Goblin revival, Lee does things in a far more domestic fashion. The stand out track for me is ‘The Number Twenty Seven’ which echoes classic US horror soundtracks perfectly – think John Carpenter or Charles Band and you’ll be right on the money. Anyone in search of a gloriously haunted electronic experience, look no further. Recommended.
