Adding to the sonic signature mapped out on last year’s ‘Reset The Warehouse’ LP, Hefty main-man John Hughes takes his sound into darker, more cavernous spaces on ‘The Black Monk EP’. The dusty breaks are still the backbone, but samples have been mutated and acidic synthesizers pulse with a murderous intention. This is an innovative take on the Chicago sound, fusing together the post-rock of Tortoise, free jazz and house music with the greatest of ease. Short, but very sweet indeed.
