nicolas bernier - The Dancing Deer
Described by the artist himself as a “pop concrete collage”, Canadian electroacoustic artist Nicolas Bernier has created an EP that takes in a number of sprawling genres. While pop and musique concrete never usually collide, through his tireless training in the dark arts of experimental music, Bernier has managed to make near-pop songs sound totally unusual and exceedingly strange. While it might be billed as an EP, ‘The Dancing Deer’ is actually almost half an hour long (longer than some full-lengths I have here). The opening piece makes up almost two thirds of the running time and through a flurry of tiny glitches, vocal snippets, percussion and drone we get drawn into Bernier’s strangely cinematic world. Parts of the EP wouldn’t sound out of place on Erik Skodvin’s Miasmah label, with David Lynch’s patented smoke-filled duskscapes creeping into the narrative. Yet ‘The Dancing Deer’ is at its core a pop record and every time you begin to think that it might be getting too dense or too dark – a beat or a pop melody chimes in to let you know it’ll all be okay in the end.
