a setting sun / various - Flower Garden Of Rejuvenation
A Setting Sun is the project of New York based electronic musician Jay Bodley, and ‘Flower Garden of Rejuvenation’ is an impeccably curated remix EP which reframes his work with help from some able additional minds. With Guiseppe Ielasi, Benoit Pioulard and Nadja on side it’s pretty clear we’ll be in for some shimmering, degraded gorgeousness, but the real surprises come from the lesser known Dial81, who provides an early Ulrich Schnauss style take on ‘Sun Hammer Pounding’ and Philadelphia’s Radere who dissolves that very same track in a bath of cassette-recorded acid, overlaying field recordings and subtle guitar. The EP ends on Nadja’s telling ‘Skipping Post Rock Mix’ of ‘Solaris Ocean’, and while the words post rock might be a no-go for the musical elitists right now, there’s something comforting in the duo’s early Mogwai stylings on this track. As coughing, roughly sampled beats bubble over swathes of distorted guitar it’s hard not to be transported back to 1997 and the days of ‘Kicking A Dead Pig’, and that’s no bad thing.
