sven weisemann - Shade EP
The re-emergance of deep, fuzzed-out, Basic Channel influenced techno continues to gather pace this year - the always excellent Meanwhile imprint here delivering a killer twelve from Styrax luminary Sven Weisemann. "Floating Dub" opens the set with a nod towards Sly & Robbie, a reduced 4/4 shuffle unfolding into a blissed out session that sounds like a cross between Chain Reaction's Fluxion and Brendon Moeller's more bass-heavy emissions. It's "Spheic Wave" on the flip, however, that totally dominates proceedings, a Convextion style template setting the scene for an arrangement of washed-out midnight chords, offset percussion and a sub-bass line that's as warm and padded as the best this label has had to offer in the past - and that's quite some compliment. In fact the track is most reminiscent of Bovill's best material, a subtle House element imbuing minimal proceedings with a touch of indescribable, late night glamour. Fabulous twelve - a massive recommendation.
