murmur / bovill - Ground EP
With a plethora of tech-house label's crossing the genre's and releasing 12"s left right and center, when you hear a record that stands out from the crowd it really sinks in. Hence the birth of new label 'Meanwhile' - kicking off with 4 tracks of lovingly crafted tech grooves from the minds of Murmur and Bovill. The opening track will take you back to those moments when the first Shakir or Carl Craig tune grabbed you, 'Catnip' revolving around lush Detroit strings smothering the beats, rising and falling around the sonar ping that's tied to the groove to deliver an emotion worthy of those artists mentioned earlier. This is even more evident on 'Taproot' with its solid sub 4/4 kick, and simplistic percussion, all of the work is done by the perfectly executed Maurizio style filter synth, echoing across the speakers and delivering hidden melodics as it slithers around the track, a superbly subtle cut that will please any Basic Channel fan, and awaken many to this fledgling imprint. Flip over for Bovill's 'Atlantic Highway', and a deep electronic Detroit cut that blows the Trapez's of this world out of the water, spacious bleeps deliver the harmonics, while the funked clear bassline is pitched up and down as it changes around the 4/4 - imagine UR taking a deep house route and hitting the high peaks of BC'S Q1.1. While the slick editing and bell like synths add an extra dimension and remenisce about Black Dog's Bytes LP, brilliant stuff. Last up Murmur's 'Sliderule' rounds off what is a superb debut, with its old skool 808 feel and spacious atmosphere it could have come from deep jazz head Move D in one of his more techno moments, reverbed percussion that sparkles as it competes with psuedo industrial noises and creates a rolling atmospheric groove. A class opener from the Meanwhile label, you cant help but wait for number 2, killer.
