wicked messenger - Vision Rites And Techniques Of Ecstasy
If the recently rebooted Hammer film studios ever fancied remaking The Devil Rides Out, perhaps the deathly aural broth of Vision Rites And Techniques Of Ecstasy would make for a suitably infernal soundtrack accompaniment. This third album from dark-ambient exponents Wicked Messenger is actually said to be influenced by Mesoamerican cultural practices, "in particular the vision quest", as the explanatory blurb would have it. Truth be told, these grim drone-scapes could just as easily be affiliated with all manner of sinister rituals or other such spooky goings on. Whatever horrific associations you might find yourself making with Wicked Messenger's unremittingly bleak music, the titles stick to the Aztec/Mayan premise, with the likes of 'Chilam Balam: The Jaguar Prophet' and 'The Vision Serpent: Invocation Of Gods And Ancestral Spirits', both of which happen to feature some immensely creepy vocal elements embedded in the panorama of hair-raising sustains and cavernous reverb washes. This is one to listen to with the lights on...
