tvo - We can Remember it for you Wholesale
From the soon-to-be ashes of the great Highpoint Lowlife label, Ruaridh Law has created the Broken20 imprint. Setting the label's agenda, Law provides one of his most exceptional releases to date as The Village Orchestra, comprising a one hour mix recorded for an event called 'Memories Are Brighter Than Our Digital Debris', plus four tracks of divergent rhythm calculations. The project's title 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale' is borrowed from a Philip K Dick short story of the same name, which also provided inspiration for the classic sci-fi film 'Total Recall', reflecting his exploration of the imperfections of memory recall in the same manner as The Caretaker or Philip Jeck. The hour long mix is a hugely impressive, passing from near silence, through degraded FM signals, expansive pastoral ambience and drone to recordings of disembodied voices talking about their memories in the first half, to more rhythmic structures in the 2nd, almost reminding of MvO Trio's technoid improv. The individual tracks are among TVO's most advanced techno romps, from the agitated swing of 'Wasted Memory' to more slippery dub techno figures in 'BC7 Memory', tripping minimalism on 'Remaindered Memory' and crushed, Autechre-esque movements on 'Lost Memory'. Very highly recommended indeed.
