bachar mar-khalifé - Oil Slick
'Oil Slick' is the debut album from Bachar Mar-Khalifé, a graduate of the illustrious Paris Conservatoire and son of Lebanese composer Marcel Khalifé. His skills as a pianist and percussionist have previously been sought out by Francesco Tristano for his work with Carl Craig and Moritz Von Oswald, but with 'Oil Slick' Bachar really sets his own agenda as an unconventional avant-gardist composer. These six tracks display a dilated imagination open to the traditional sounds of his motherland and more progressive modern structures, best heard in the arabesque math-rock of 'Progeria', while 'Distance' incorporates deliciously ornate vocals with complex yet sublime jazz arrangements to match. 'Around The Lamp' is the album's quietest moment, deploying droning vocal techniques and hushed solo piano, next to the electro-acoustic structures of 'NTF ntf', the multi-faceted folk song styles of 'Democratia' and the plain strange 'Marée Noire'.
