ana caravelle - Basic Climb
The Non Projects label presents the debut album from 22-year-old Los Angeles-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer, Ana Caravelle. The central instrument on Basic Climb is Caravelle's harp, although the arrangements extend far beyond that, adding a beautiful array of woodwinds, strings and percussion to the recordings. While you'd probably be expecting a certain amount of Joanna Newsom comparison in a write-up of Caravelle's work (as is the certain fate of any harp-wilding female songwriter for a generation to come), on something like 'Shapeshifting' you'll hear a more experimental, modern-classical grounded approach to composition that steers Caravelle away from such dangerous ground and into musically rich and rather original territory.
