The under-represented Russian beat scene gets a good leg-up with this ace comp on the promising Error Broadcast label. The set is curated by Moscow-based online beats and culture zine, Gimme5, who would appear to have top taste just from a glance at their site (shame we can't read it though!). While the majority of these tracks reference the better known Beat Dimensions and Low End Theory sounds outta Europe and LA respectively, Russia's definitely got it's own style, often articulated with a predilection for melancholy blue electronics, as with the cinematic downbeat vibes of Wols' 'Bathyscape Finds A Music Box' or OL's 'Kombi'. More diverse offerings come from Kontext, probably best known for his releases on Bristol's Immerse imprint, with the twitchy glitches of 'Surrogat' reminding of Opiate, and they're unafraid to enter noisy territory with the cosmic friction of Nocow's 'Dynamicize'. Fans of Dimlite, Dorian Concept, Hudson Mohawke etc. should check this out.
