jneiro jarel - Fauna
Multi-talented beatsmith Jneiro Jarel (producer for Dr. Who Dat?, Shape Of Broad Minds, MF Doom, remixer of TV On The Radio, among many other things), offers his Brazilian-inspired 'Fauna' LP for the ever-interesting Kindred Spirits label. The album was recorded over a three month period where Jarel gorged himself on the renowned Brazilian record collection of KS label-head KC tha Funkaholic, inspired by classic records from Arthur Verocai and Zuco 103, besides the more commonly known inspirations of Caetano Veloso and Sergio Mendes soaked up in his formative years. He finds a fine analog for the wealth of Brazilian music in its unrivaled wildlife, creating a 12-track set of floridly melodic and lushly rhythmic compositions as diverse and spiritual as the place that prompted them. Entering his dense and vivid ecosystem, he deftly darts through the liquid Jungle syncopations of 'Voice Of the Kayopo' to humid, jazz-psyched downbeats in previous single 'Amazonica' and onto the gorgeously warped beat science of 'Bird Charm', before arriving at the soulful centre piece 'Indigo Eden' and deeper still to the aquatic broken beat of 'Can You Compute Bruuhzeel'. Proper Brazilian nuts will be able to discern much better the confluence of inspirations at play here, resulting in a very rewarding listen. Fans of Madlib's Brazilian Mind Fusion and Medicine Show mixtapes really need to score this!
