common eider & king eider - Worn
Featuring guest appearances from Grouper's Liz Harris and Charalambides' Tom Carter, this new release from Common Eider, King Eider sees the project expand beyond its nucleus of Bob Fisk (Badgerlore, Free Porcupine Society) towards a more fully formed quartet line-up. The album begins poised in a state of fairly extreme quietness, exchanging wafts of bowed guitar, fragmentary piano phrases and ethereal vocals through the course of 'The Rabbits Will Come Again'. After a slow start, the piece's dark, avant-folk beauty becomes fully apparent. In its beginnings, 'When We Sewed Skins' takes on a similarly gaseous tone - like an experimental Clannad, if you will - only to erupt from out of nowhere with blasts of distortion, feedback and cantankerous cymbal clashes. Liz Harris brings her disembodied vocal stylings to 'Ennui', combining with freetime waves of slow-shifting piano and guitar to spine-tingling effect, before the tone changes somewhat for 'They Want To Dig For Gold But All They Will Find Is Blood'. Here, a lumbering electric guitar drone swerves between intervals like a restless doom-metal track while a chorus of wordless vocals provide some weary pathos. Album closer 'Earth Liver' proves especially strong, running into abstract modern-classical form with its strange tunings and microtonal string arrangements.
