bill wells & stefan schneider - Pianotapes
Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist Bill Wells teams up with To Rococo Rot's Stefan Schneider for his latest project. Wells performs at the piano while Schneider records his performance via old reel-to-reel tape machines, playing the music back at altered speeds. These strange duets are kept interactive and in real-time, as Wells adapts his playing according to Schneider's tape treatments. One of the earliest pieces, 'PNTPS 4' makes especially good use of an old Roland Space Echo, casting muffled, instantly aged reflections of the original performance, whilst 'PNTPS 88' frames Wells' bell-like, minimalist keying with crackly, percussive tape blurts. Immediately after this, 'PNTPS 3' seems to remove the live piano element altogether, reproducing Wells' music via beautifully dusty, warbling loops and slowed down tones. With great synergy, these two artists have embarked upon a series of completely absorbing musical dialogues for Pianotapes - surely one of Karaoke Kalk's finest releases in some time.
