barnt - What Is A Number, That A Man May Know It?
This is the official debut release from Barnt, who previously appeared on the Magazine label's Cologne Tape EP. These three tracks immediately separate themselves from the more conventional 4/4 sounds that regularly do the rounds by integrating the rigidity of a modern, sequenced techno framework into the kosmische-inspired synthesizer-driven electronics of the 1970s. 'Collection' is a great starting point, drifting through the sort of electrified rhythms that were first heard forty years or so back in Dusseldorf, while 'Minister' opts for a housier sound, skipping through an irregular, swinging beat while the non-rhythmic elements keep the feel of the piece experimental and unpredictable. Finally, the title track reduces the beat down to a regular kick pattern, leaving a spread of classic analogue sounds to flesh out the production in a sweetly melodious fashion.
