ciafrica - DJ/Rupture Presents CIAfrica
Killah product from the Dutty Artz camp, presenting DJ/Rupture rifling through the rugged street HipHop/Electro catalogue of Ivory Coast's CIAfrica. Their name is an acronym, standing for Clan Des Indigenes Accables Of United States of Africa, and demarcates a Wu Tang like posse of rowdy MCs and singers centred around visionary producer Green Dog (aka Amadou Komara). They've found a staunch ally in DJ/Rupture, who concisely blends seventeen CIAfrica tracks inna wicked mixtape style, offering a grimily futurist and potently raw rack of sounds "for those who get bored listening to all that black-and-happy African music". As the architects of their style, Green Dog & Angelopsi keep matters deadly heavy, splicing road-level rap beats with dancehall and bellicose hiphop to create a distinct and frenetic backdrop for polyglot lyrics, sung, spat and shouted in energetic freestyles slipping between English, French and various African tongues. At times it reminds of the brilliant (but short-lived) Airborn Audio project by High Priest and M. Sayyid, but there's tracks like the bruising bashment of 'Kossia' and the abrasive functions of 'Babylon Advisory' that come closer to East London grime than anything coming out of Africa right now. F**king heavyweight beats!
