seeland - How to Live
The second album from Seeland finds the band (started by Broadcast's Timothy Felton and Plone's Neil McAuley) in fine voice, taking their particular brand of "Retro Futurist" pop to the next level. Although introductory number 'Black Dot, White Spider' sounds fairly familiar for its analogue, motorik aesthetic, Seeland quickly prove to be far more qualified than most to be working within the now highly fashionable krautrock idiom, and besides which, there are far more sides to the band's craft on show here: 'Local Park' is a beautiful piece of antiquated synth-pop - like a pastoral Ghost Box concoction taken to a tuneful, fully formed natural conclusion. Along similar lines, 'Armour' is especially redolent of Broadcast's magnificent '70s plundering output, with a production job that brilliantly channels the aesthetic of old ATV theme tunes, harpsichord and all. Delightful stuff.
