oneohtrix point never - A Pact Between Strangers
'A Pact Between Strangers' first emerged as a CDr on the Gneiss Things label, which is run by Emeralds main man Steve Hauschildt. Technically it's one of OPN's earliest releases, but the tracks were recorded relatively recently back in early '08. It features two lengthy synth drifts full of wistful kosmische emotion sandwiching the mini-drama of the title track, which uncannily recalls some lost Badalamenti score to a dark subplot in Sunset Beach, maybe. However, 'The Pretender' invokes something a little more from the modern classical arena, painting a widescreen vista with some distinct similarities to the work of Seasons (Pre-Din) and certainly his proggy peers from Emeralds, while 'When We Get Back From New York' is a one of his lushly discordant compositions full of spiraling arpeggios and heavy lidded new-age ambience.
