akitsa - Goetie
Goetie was the debut album proper from Canadian black metal duo Akitsa and was for many the first taste of a band who for me are at the forefront of the scene. Dirtier and seemingly containing a lot more urgency than much of the US black metal scene, this was taking militant nationlist lyrics and burying them in a soup of cassette noise, fuzz and ear pounding percussion. It comes across at times as a cross between hardcore punk and the kind of black metal Bone Awl have made their signature, and at others closer to Hospital Productions owner Dominick Fernow's own Prurient project (most obviously on the destructive 'Pendaison de l'Humanitie') but this is an original statement from a hugely important act. The band never seem to have reached the kind of status their US peers might have done, but don't let that put you off - for me they're one of the best kept secrets of the genre, and every time I listen to this record I am left puzzled at why more people aren't coughing up blood about how ridiculously good they are. Either way metal fans, noise fans and merely interested parties need to stop whatever it is they're doing and take a closer look, there couldn't be a better introduction to Akitsa than 'Goetie'.
