akitsa - Au Crepuscule De L'Esperance
The Canadian black metal behemoth that is Akitsa returns with a startlingly abrasive new full-length for Hospital Productions. Turns out that the French language somehow suits this music rather well, and the vocals are especially of note; during the unkempt Nordic fizz of 'La Voix Brutale' the lead almost sounds like a possessed Edith Piaf. Also freshening up the usual Nordic formula, next up, the beats crunch into life for 'Les Sentinelles', sounding considerably more swaggering - even a bit disco-y, you might say - than black metal would ordinarily permit. Getting back to terrorising, guitar-strangling unpleasantness, the title track ditches the beats and sets sail upon a sea of fizz and drone, paralleling the abstract noise trenches carved out by opening cut 'Crematorium'. The mix of snarling noise and berserker lo-fi metal keeps this album's tracklist fresh and littered with surprises.
