For Which He Plies The Lash is the second full-length from Ash Pool, a black metal duo comprising Dominick Fernow of Prurient and Kris Lapke, who's known for his work under the aliases Alberich, Furisubi and as one half of Northern Cross. These two make a fearsome noise together and the song titles brilliantly set the scene: 'On The Rings Of Saturn Adam And Eve Conceive Cain', 'Porcelain Cancer Spear' and 'Big Bang Black Metal' are just three of the gems listed, and the Ash Pool sound more than lives up to this sinister verbage. While 'black metal' gives a decent enough account of this band's ethos, the record avoids the trebly, Nordic-inspired school of production in favour of a more razor-edged, full blooded assault on the senses. The guitar riffs are intricate and suggest a level of schooling in metal that transcends black metal convention altogether. 'Holocaust Temple' seems to have its roots in NWOBHM, and similarly, the agile tempo shifts of 'Big Bang Black Metal' exhibit a thorough grounding in the classics of the genre. As you'd probably expect from a Fernow-related project, Ash Pool bring a searing level of aggression to their recordings, with vocals that range from authoritative death-grunts to outrageous torture chamber shrieking - 'Porcelain Cancer Spear' even has a passage of Gregorian-style chanting that nicely disrupts the furious pace of it all. A sublimely ferrocious example of the dark arts, Ash Pool's sophomore album comes highly recommended to all underground metal followers.
