akitsa - Sang Nordique
On asking for some devastating black metal in Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions shop in Brooklyn there was one band which was handed over with the words 'if you don't like this, you can't buy anything else'. Staring at my hundred-dollar plus pile of wax on the counter I knew it had to be something special, something so special that Fernow would risk over a hundred bucks just to get the word out. And damn was it special, 'Sang Nordique' has long been due a cd re-issue and now it's out there I'm hoping and praying that this shockingly good Canadian black metal act (originally a duo, now only one solitary member) will get more recognition. Some of you might have come across the name before, most recently they collaborated with Fernow on a split LP, but this album (and its predecessor, the similarly re-isssued 'Goetie') is a truly essential document in wyrd black metal. You see it's not your regular strain of black metal as popularised by Mayhem or Darkthrone, and it's not coming from the USBM set of Nachtmystium, Leviathan or Xasthur, rather this is something a little more jaw dropping, and a little rougher around the edges. Those of you who have heard Bone Awl (who released a double 7" on Hospital last year) or Ildjarn will know the kind of grim, noisy soundscapes these guys are aiming for and twinned with arresting Quebec nationalist lyrics and mind-melting gothic imagery there should be no reason not to add this to your collection instantly. A truly phenomenal black metal record - those of you who jumped on Southern Lord's Velvet Cacoon re-issues or the L'Acephale album on Aurora Borealis are only scratching the surface - this is where the KVLT is at...
