panda bear - Tomboy / Slow Motion
Kinda hard to believe it's been three years since the last batch of Panda Bear cookies, but granted, he's been busy with his world-taking Animal Collective duties. 'Tomboy/Slow Motion' hopefully signals a new album on the horizon, which should be an interesting proposition after ingesting these two tracks. 'Tomboy' centres around a flared guitar chord sequence hinting at dreamy late 80s indiepop or equally a certain sense of Morricone-esque tension, set to a submerged and steady motorik pulse with nautical dub FX. On the other hand 'Slow Motion' sets up a crisp hiphop drum break worthy of DJ Premier while Bear fashions a finely layered collage of indecipherable dialogue samples and vocal loops circling each other in elliptical sequences. Naturally, the effect is supremely psychedelic and bodes very well for his next release, due to come out on Kompakt sometime soon. Highly Recommended.
