Ranking among the most anticipated house/electronic albums of the year, 'Black City' is Matthew Dear's latest opus. Three years have passed since 'Asa Breed' , which he's spent diligently maintaining his other personas, releasing records as False, Audion and Jabberjaw for a host of labels. However, it's no secret that he saves his finest, most pop-friendly ideas for release under his birth name, unpressured by dancefloor trends and free to create something very much in the image of his own romantic psyche. So with 'Black City' he hints at classic pop from Talking Heads to Prince and Roxy Music mixed with an advanced electronic sensitivity. 'Honey' introduces the set with a lonely blue hue, featuring cracked, almost grungy vocals and cold reverbs, while 'I Can't Feel' follows, warranting the Prince comparison in his slow and groovy house manner, and the emphatic elocution of 'Little People (Black City)' hints at the suited swagger of Bryan Ferry, with a modern disco backing to match. 'Slowdance' is a huge highlight, laden with cascades of molten synthwork and almost sing-a-long chorus, and yet again there's no avoiding the Prince comparison with the bold drums and lobe tickling low delivery of 'You Put A Smell On Me'. Bringing it to a close is the lush coupling of submerged electropop on 'More Surgery' and the beatless atmospheric flourish of 'Gem', displaying a hugely confident producer/singer in the prime of his career. Highly Recommended.
