proem - Enough Conflict
One of IDM's most ardent exponents, Proem (aka Richard Bailey) returns with an eighth album, Enough Conflict. Setting aside his recent dalliances with ambient soundscapes, Bailey is back in full voice with obliterated beat edits, post-Autechre programming nuances and plenty of apocalyptic textures. It's the crispness and all-round heaviness of the beats that proves most addictive here, with opener 'Deep Sleeping Birds' serving as a compelling statement of intent before 'She Never Cries' unleashes some incredibly detailed glitchy whirrs and pops. It'd be easy to lay into Proem as being something of a dinosaur within the electronic music community - it's rare for anyone to stick with a single genre for so long - yet Enough Conflict's finest moments coax a visceral response out of you, and it's always refreshing to hear this sort of nerdy programming detail put to such excellent use.
