the boats - Tomorrow Time
We’re all in search of that perfect (and cost effective) gift this time of year, and it seems the shops simply aren’t there to help us. We are old enough and wise enough to resist the temptation of Disney branded chocolate sets and Trivial Pursuit the Maritime Timepieces edition, so what have we got to fall back on? I mean, we don’t actually want to give any real thought to the whole affair do we? Well thank goodness for those caring northern fellers the Boats, fresh from a hedonistic world tour and lush accompanying EP, they have brought in a simply delicious brandy-butter laden full-length to usher in Santa and his band of mischievous elves. Coming housed in what could easily be a handmade Christmas card, this is the present you’ve all been waiting for and it gets better – a far cry from the band’s woolen woven previous output, this time they’ve let rip on the track titles. The album opens with ‘A Sincere F**k You’, which runs into ‘May our Enemies Never Find Happiness’ and features future classics like ‘You’re an Idiot’ and ‘Go to Sleep (Or I’ll Put You to Sleep)’. It’s the bad Christmas cheer you’ve always wanted to show, but never had the guts to – the shop assistant who always gives you a dirty look when all you want to do is buy a brand new indigo rubber ball. Argh – yes that feels cathartic and I haven’t even told you about the music yet. I’m sure you’re familiar with the Boats’ patented brand of electronic loveliness by now though, they have a homespun charm which is attempted by many but mastered by so few. Their last album ‘We Made it For You’ achieved almost universal acclaim and ‘Tomorrow Time’ is an appropriately forward thinking follow-up. Instead of merely replicating the piano-heavy formula, the band have looked towards traditional song structures, roping in some vocal assistance from their friends Elaine Reynolds and Chris Stewart. It’s this gloriously personal take on pop which makes the Boats’ music so utterly entrancing, and there are few better records to play around a crackling log fire with your alcohol-plied friends and relatives this Christmas. Don’t wait until tomorrow, you don’t want to be late for Christmas now do you! As lovely as an extra large Waitrose Panettone – YUM.
