The standard of this Explorer's Club series has been all-but impeccable, and the eighth installment preserves that quality thanks to a beautiful acoustic recording from The Sleeping Years and an entry from Manchester multi-instrumentalists Homelife. Covering The Go-Betweens, The Sleeping Years tackle 'Cattle And Cane' with a simple and stripped back arrangement that swells in all the right places to imbue the piece with a wonderful sense of emotive punctuation. The bass drops late on in the recording for maximum impact, embracing beautiful cello strokes and a gradual swelling of drums. On 'Old Atlas', Homelife weave an intricately layered, junkshop take on Afropop, lending a slightly spooky, wistful quality as they go. It's all incredibly lovely and should, by rights, go on for at least twice as long.
