For many, Mount Kimbie's debut EP, 'Maybes', was one of the best electronica/dubstep records of 2009. Hot Flush revisit tracks from that 12" and follow-up 'Sketches On Glass' with suitably brilliant remixes from part-time band member James Blake, Falty DL and Instra:mental. Blake's revision (previously included on Scuba's Sub:stance mix) is nothing short of astounding, taking the alien diva vox of the emotive 'Maybes' and lacing them into one of his fluid combinations of R'n'B, dubstep and advanced electronics, rendering individual elements to make them float languidly in their own smoky electro-jazz environment. Play this on a good set of speakers and your jaw will drop. Similarly, Falty DL impresses with his mix of 'Serged', again running with the jazz abstractions to create a submerged current of percussion, bumbling subs and ghostly organ keys. Finally, with 'At Least' Instra:mental provides the most stable dancefloor moment, rolling out a straight 4/4 techno-stepper with all the dynamism focussed on abyssal subs, practically verging on unsound and guaranteed to mash your bone marrow on a big rig. Highly recommended!
