the morning benders - Big Echo
Big Echo is the second album by Berkeley, California's The Morning Benders, a follow-up to their 2008 debut, Talking Through TIn Cans. Clearly versed in their West Coast pop heritage, this band present their sunny harmonies with strategically deployed orchestration and a wall-of-sound style presentation that owes much to the production/mixing collaboration of singer and songwriter Christopher Chu with Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor. Indeed, fans of Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest will no doubt feel a strong bond with this record too, as it certainly seems to share a similar ethos - something that becomes most apparent on the more experimental moments, like the expansive 'Pleasure Sighs' or the spacey and detailed 'Wet Cement'. Big Echo also knows when to shift gear towards all-out euphoria too though, reaching upwards for 'Excuses' and the Brian Wilson-esque 'Mason Jar'.
