oscar mcclure - Compost
A collection of (very) abstract hip-hop instrumentals from new name on the scene Oscar McClure, Compost stitches together a series of relatively short, beat-driven miniatures to create a flowing sequence full of intriguing sound sources and off-kilter timing. McClure's main trick on this release is to take organically sourced recordings and squish the resultant sound matter into kick and snare-shaped pockets. After the auditory amuse bouche of brief drone piece 'Sawdust', 'Grass Cuttings' stutters into life, sounding like an electroacoustic version of something Autechre might have done in the late nineties - crunching and smashing samples taken in the field (very possibly in the most literal sense) until they slip into punchy, swinging rhythmic patterns. 'Weeds' and 'Kitchen Scraps' continue to explore this avenue with considerable success while the likes of 'Cardboard' and 'Seaweed' momentarily redirect the playlist in the direction of more esoteric soundscaping. The fusion of cleverly manipulated found sounds and granulated, morphing beat loops is unusual indeed - perhaps this is what Machinefabriek would sound like if he ever went hip-hop (who knows, it might happen) - and Compost certainly makes for an entertaining transgression of genre boundaries.
