lorn - Nothing Else

At the forefront of a new generation of hiphop-leaning electronica producers, Lorn comes branded with the Flying Lotus seal of approval on his Brainfeeder debut, 'Nothing Else'. However, despite being shepherded by the good father of modern hiphop, Lorn is still a relative outsider both sonically and geographically, being the only Brainfeeder artist to not come from LA and bearing a sound that mixes hi-strength electronica with hiphop sampledelia in a determinedly darker manner to his labelmates. Perhaps the mastering job from Clark has played a role in the sheer visceral force of tracks like 'Bretagne' and 'Automation', but there's still a filigree swing and dynamism that's been there since his very earliest productions. The spooling, razor sharp bleeps of 'Voids I & II' come across like a more sober Zomby mixed with Nosaj Thing, while the wheezing melodies of 'Tomorrow' show a more tender, melancholy side also found in 'Cherry Moon' and 'Glass & Silver'. Lorn's sound is rife with angst and darkened moods but he doesn't express them in any whingy emo-tronic style, he mastered a style of expression that allows him to be convey his feeling with clear conviction which should make this album very popular. Tipped for fans of Nosaj Thing, Fly Lo or Loops Haunt.
