the fresh & onlys / golden triangle - Split
East coast meets West on this new Hardly Art split release, teaming Brooklyn's Golden Triangle with San Francisco's The Fresh & Onlys. Big name indie-rock producer maven Chris Coady oversees the Golden Triangle side, which kicks off in brilliant style with the slightly Throwing Muses-like 'Cold Bones' before the 'Jungle Jim' serves up more of a scrappy punk-rock romp, involving a breakdown in which the band make (alarmingly believable) animal noises. Flipping over, The Fresh & Onlys continue to beguile with their home-made garage-pop sounds, leading with the addictive power-chord frenzy of 'Head Of Steam' only to wrap up with the super lo-fi 'I'm Not Myself Today' which sounds a bit like it was recorded down a phone line. Only with less bass. Naturally, this approach fits the song's old-fashioned, DIY pop stylings down to the ground, and the results are predictably ace.
