holy f*ck - Latin
Canadian live electronica mavens Holy Fuck are so much more than just a very sweary, blaspheming band name. Like fellow cuss-jockeys Fuck Buttons, this quartet manage to make a hypnotic racket that lies somewhere between fiery noise music and more dancefloor-oriented fare. '1MD' begins in a manner that's sure to prompt queries of "Is this thing on?", gradually rising up from silence towards moderate tonal wafts, before ascending to the point of outright, overturing immensity. This is drone music on a biblical scale - but it's only a beginning, offering an intro into the unforseeably funky bass tweaks and shuffling beats of 'Red Lights', which in turn sets up the glossy electro-din of 'Latin America'. It's at this point that the album's standout cut, 'Stay Lit' arrives. This track offers something altogether more musical than anything that came before, perhaps recalling a wiry, keyboard-driven version of something Mogwai might have cranked out during their essential, early years. The intensifying mix builds up to a circulating pile-up of oscillators, hammering drums and noisy horn sections before giving way to 'Silva & Grimes' comparatively spacious and serene motorik odyssey. Late on, 'Lucky' provides another glaring standout, although here the band depart slightly from the record's form, heading towards more openly rocky material that actually brings to mind a performance-enhanced Deerhunter. There's more variety here than could be heard on the aforementioned Fuck Buttons' Tarot Sport LP, but the essential message of the record is very similar, leaving you in little doubt that semi-improvised/live electronic music can be a formidably powerful medium in the right hands. Excellent work.
