machinefabriek & freiband - Kilauea
The subject of a seriously fast turnaround, Kilauea was recorded live in Berlin barely a month prior to its listing here. This collaboration between Dutch masters Rutger Zuydervelt and Frans De Waard (renowned for his work with Kapotte Muziek, Beequeen and Goem) is based on the duo's prior joint effort, Oahu, released two years ago on Low Point. The duo set about fashioning a twenty-minute improvisation that teeters between lulling, nicely poised ambience and more abrasive, textural work that hints at some of the contact mic techniques you might hear in a live noise set. Distortion, static and glitches all start to pile up towards the end, leading us down a slightly more prickly path than Machinefabriek-related projects would ordinarily tend to. This is certainly to be regarded as a good thing however, and the Freiband presence brings a welcome caustic element to Machinefabriek's customarily very serene universe.
