walls - Walls
Perhaps continuing the crossover legacy left by The Field, Walls represent one of Kompakt's most interesting forays outside of the label's traditional techno heartland. This London band combine members from Allez-Allez and Banjo Or Freakout for an electronic project that seems to pull out influences from classic krautrock, disco, ambient electronica and even modern psych-pop travellers like Animal Collective. 'Burnt Sienna' opens the record in anthemic, quasi-Balearic fashion, taking on a subdued tempo but a luscious free-flowing sense of melody. Shifting into an almost tropical mode, 'Hang Four' fleshes out some scrunched, atmospheric rhythmic loops with blissful, reverbed guitars - all of which add to a fresh, summery feel. Late into the album 'Gaberdine' arrives with vocals, raising one of the most pronouncedly pop-geared dancefloor moments and setting up the weirdo Paw Tracks-style vibes of closer 'Austerlitz Wide Open'. Excellent stuff.
