various / now again - Forge Your Own Chains: Heavy Psychedelic Ballads & Dirges
Stones Throw's soul and funk subsidiary Now Again changes tack for a minute with a collection of rare psyche jams recorded between 1968 and 1974. Apparently inspired by J-Rocc losing it over the D.R. Hooker track of the title, the label decided to pick out those heavy psychedelic ballads and dirges that had a disregard for the conventions of the style, taken from worldwide spread of bands and LPs that have since become source material for Stones Throw releases. Tracks like Damon's 'Don't You Feel Me' sampled by Egon and J-Rocc for the Guilty Simpson album, or the D.R. Hooker psyche track of the title whose trumpet conflates the purists aesthetic where as DJ Shadow remarks that "horns on a psychedelic album are, to the psychedelic purist, as annoying as a fuzz guitar solo is to a funk purist". So we've got tracks from South Korea 'Shin Jung Hyn & The Men feat. Janh Hyun's Twilight', or Iran with Kourosh Yaghmaei's 'Hajm-E Khaali', plus more from Shadrach Chameleon, Morly Grey, T. Zchiew & The Johnny and Ofege. A must-listen experience for anyone who picked up the 'Psyche 101' comp or avid followers of the Finders Keepers imprint.
